Washington, D.C.—The far-too-common business model of the big guy gobbling up smaller competition has touched another aspect of our industry. Penton Media, Inc., a New York, NY-based media giant, has acquired assets of the Natural Products Association (NPA) industry tradeshow, Natural MarketPlace. Beginning in 2009, Penton’s New Hope Natural Media Group will manage the tradeshow in conjunction with the association, according to an NPA announcement.

New York, NY—Big Pharma giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), based here, along with the American Dietetic Association, the Obesity Society and Shaping America’s Health, have petitioned the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to consider “weight loss” a disease claim. The group feels that being overweight is a risk factor for numerous diseases, so weight loss should be deemed a disease claim. Few in our industry are convinced that a drug company (with weight-loss products on the market) should be able to change the law with a petition.
